Invitation to ParticipateTo take the DNA test, you need to be a male with the CASEY surname. Your Y-Chromosome, and that of your father, your brothers, your father's brothers and sons (males with CASEY surname) will be identical (except for rare mutations). If you are female CASEY descendant, encourage your father or brother to take the test if your maiden name is CASEY, otherwise your male CASEY cousins, uncles, etc. will work. Ideally there should be two participants from each branch of your family to allow for unrecorded adoptions, etc. and to verify and confirm each other's test results. What is the procedure? We recommend you first check the various links on the website of Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), the company we have an account with for this project. Their website will answer most of your questions about DNA testing as a supplement to family history research. Then, if you are interested in participating in the project, email the Project Coordinator, and include your FULL NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE#, and EMAIL ADDRESS. Before the test results come in, we would also like a brief history on your EARLIEST DOCUMENTED CASEY ANCESTOR, his wife and children, with dates/places of birth, death, and marriage. The Project Administrator will order the DNA kit, which will be sent directly to the person taking the test. The kit consists of a cheek scraper, collection tubes, and instructions on collecting DNA samples in two minutes by using a painless cheek scraper. Return the kit and your check ($169 + $2 shipping) to FTDNA. FTDNA will send your kit to a lab at the University of Arizona where they will analyze the DNA in 25 of your y-chromosome segments. The results are then returned to you and FTDNA. The time-frame, from sending in your kit until the time you receive your results, is usually around five or six weeks. When you order a DNA kit, you are assigned a kit number which allows only you to view the results of your DNA test on FTDNA's website. FTDNA will assist in interpreting the results. We will also display all participant's results on this website for comparison purposes, using your kit number, rather than your name. We will not use your name or the name of any living person in your line without your permission. |
