Online Students

Through the years that I have taught online reading courses, I have found that a certain type of student is successful in an online course. The student must be self-motivated to work on materials weekly and respond on the discussion board. The student needs to communicate with peers online, conduct readings and research online and use classroom observations and CD-ROM viewing as a basis for reflection and written contributions.

Students who procrastinate, need face to face explanations and spend minimal time reflecting and responding on the computer are better served in a traditional weekly face to face campus course.

I have really enjoyed the online class. I do think that having the students communicate with each other is great because that is something that is not as easy to do online as it is in person. I know that I really need to get to the computer for a live chat. Does anyone think a later time would work (all chats have been set up for 7)? I feel that even though we are not in a traditional classroom I am learning so much because I have kept up with the reading better (it is necessary in an online class) than I do in my traditional classes.

I like the flexibility the online class allows. It's difficult to be exciting about going to CSULB after working all day. I also feel that getting teachers familiar with the plethora of on-line resources available and just becoming used to communicating via the net is of great value. Many of the older teachers I work with had a very hard time learning how to send and receive e-mail. I think it took one teacher 6 months to learn how to turn her computer on (that was just last year). Now I'm working on getting the staff to schedule meetings with Outlook. I think I'm facing an uphill battle.

I haven't participated in an on-line chat either (I was reading Krisi's note). When is the next scheduled time? 8:00 PM works for me if that is any better for you Kristi.

Taking this course online has forced me to keep up with the class because I am forced to do the readings and all of the work, which is a good thing. I really do enjoy taking a course online because it does allow me to do my homework on my own time with some restrictions, of course. Now that I have taken this class online, I wonder what the in class course is like. Even though that I do not have to go to class like a normal class, I have felt that this online course has been a lot of work so far. That is not a horrible thing. I have learned a lot this semester.

I agree with Holly the class has gone by so fast. Also Maria's comment about being able to read others posts and comments really helps to connect with the class, I enjoyed doing the ichat last night, it was helpful and fun to communicate with the teacher and the other students at the same time. This is a great class but it is hard to juggle while working full time and taking 7 other classes. It has been difficult at times but it has prepared me for the online classes to come and I have really learned a lot this semester! Thanks Jennifer

I have really enjoyed the online class. This was my very first class and I have had a wonderful experience in it. I am looking forward to taking another online class although I have been looking in the schedule of classes and I do not see any listed. Does anyone know if there are any other methods courses or any courses available online. It helps a lot when you work full time and have other responsibilities. I will definately reccommend this class to my fellow classmates. It is great!

This has been my first online course and it has been a great experience. It really is up to the student-so if you want to put in the work you can easily get an A. You just have to be on top of things since there isn't the classroom meeting time. I have also felt that it is easier to learn more form the class since you are interacting with other students and can read material as slowly or quickly as you want. The most difficult thing was at the beginning of the semester-when I had to get into my routine and figure out how I learned best. Once I got my routine and set time aside for the class and homework-it has been great!

I have found that taking this class online has given me the freedom to do my work at my own pace. It also gave me the oppurtunity to read what other people were thinking after viewing the cd-roms or reading the text. Their questions and insights were helpful for understanding the work. The instructor feed back is a great way to keep myself on the right track. This class was a great learning experience and I can't believe it is almost over.

I think that the online class has given me more exposure to many different lesson plans and great ideas from my fellow classmates. Because we are sharing our work on a weekly basis, I think that we are able to learn a lot more from one another. In face to face classes there is not enough time to read and comment on other people's lessons. Therefore I think that the online class has very beneficial to me and I think that more methods classes should allow for students to share their work and ideas regularly.

Taking this online course has been extremely benefitial to me and my eduactional experience as well as an asset to my career as a future eduactor. Having an online course has broadened my horizons on the technological aspect of teaching and learning and hs given me many great ideas for my own classroom. In addition, the flexability of an online course has given me more time to research and study the material for the class. I feel that I have gotten more out of this online course than any of my other courses this semester!
