Happy National Religious Freedom Day!

I’m so conflicted, dear readers.

It’s National Religious Freedom Day, commemorating the signing of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom.

I should post a serious discussion about religious freedom. After all, it’s a serious issue in these turbulent times. After the Charlie Hebdo attacks, twenty-six mosques in France have been attacked. The Pope is putting his foot in his mouth and saying blasphemers should be punched in the face. My own dear home state of Virginia is voting on a bill that could potentially allow literally any business to refuse to serve gays in the name of religious liberty. These are serious times.

But really, I just want to post the most dramatic “FREEDOM!!1!” graphics I can find, and that’s what I’m going to do.

Flag, cross, eagle - the trinity of freedom.

Flag, cross, eagle – the trinity of freedom.

Thomas Jefferson is judging you from behind the Statute.

Thomas Jefferson is judging you from behind the Statute.

I hope you guys appreciate that I went through a truly remarkable quantity of images of flags and bibles for you so you could see that creepy eagle and Thomas Jefferson judging you.

Go do something freedom-y today or Mr. Jefferson will be disappointed. And please try to remember that religious freedom is way more complicated than all the flag-waving would make it seem and we should all try to be kind to each other.
