I <3 Old Buildings

Map of Dutch buildings color coded by age. Here’s a cool thing: a map of all the buildings in the Netherlands, color coded by age. The neighborhood that’s zoomed in when you click the link is my neighborhood; it says my house was built in 1915! If you scroll to the right, you’ll get to the city centre (where there’s a lot more dark red, for older buildings.) The academic building for the theology department, at Oude Boteringestraat, is one of the dark-red pre-1800 buildings. One of our professors gave us a great tour of the building on introduction day; the facade/front half are from a rich merchant’s house, later owned by a local politician, and the back half, which was built on later, was the courthouse until 2002, and is still decorated like when it was built in the 1700s.
