Virginia and the Great Bathroom Debate

public restroom signLast month Stafford County – near where I went to college – voted to forbid a trans fourth grader from using the girls’ bathroom, because nothing says “family values” like taking a community vote on where a small child can pee.

Now, Virginia’s bathroom police are taking their campaign on the road. Donald Blake, chairman of the Virginia Christian Alliance, wants to make Virginia “ground zero” on school bathroom policy. His group recently sent letters to school boards around the state, asking to be kept in the loop about any cases of “transgenderism.”

Let’s lay some things out:

“Transgenderism” is a term used almost exclusively by assholes trying to pathologize transgender people.

The American Medical Association says: “Being transsexual, transgender, or gender nonconforming is a matter of diversity, not pathology.”

Launching a statewide political campaign aimed at preventing children from having a safe place to use the bathroom is revolting.

Look, Mr. Blake and friends: I know you feel like allowing a child assigned male at birth to use the girls’ restroom or vice versa with cause America to crumble into anarchy and crossdressing or something. But you’re trying to shine a public spotlight on vulnerable children, who are probably already facing stress and bullying and just want a safe place to pee.

That’s a horrible way to treat anyone, but especially children, and you should be ashamed. Take your bathroom policing battle somewhere else. We don’t want it here.
