Virginia Election Update: Ken Cuccinelli Still Totally Terrible

Hey! The Virginia election in on November 5th, a little more than a week from now! Are you ready to vote? Know where your polling place is? Got appropriate ID?

Good, because this one’s important.

Colorlines has a great summary of some important things to know about this election. For example! The winner will have big implications for the future of the Voting Rights Act! Terry McAuliffe, the Democrat, wants to create a state-level version of the law to protect minority voters, while Ken Cuccinelli, the very terrible Republican, wants some of the most restrictive voter ID laws in the country.

Similarly – remember those long lines at the presidential election two years ago? The County Electoral Boards, always have a majority of whatever party wins the general election. Right now we have all Republican-majority electoral boards, and they’ve been purging the voter rolls and generally making voting more difficult. If we get a Democrat in office, we get new electoral boards too.

In case you needed a reminder about how completely unreasonable Cuccinelli is on social issues, here’s a lengthy explanation of how his refusal to update Virginia’s sodomy law to put it in compliance with Lawrence v. Texas undermines actual sexual assault laws! Expressing unconstitutional disapproval of gay people is more important to Ken Cuccinelli than having functioning laws against sex offenders.

Vote on Tuesday, November 5th! I realize no one is excited about this election because state elections are unusually terrible, but it’s really, really important!
