Wait Til Next Year

I bought a ‘W’ flag on Ebay and it arrived in yesterday’s mail. It’s the same sort of flag they fly over Wrigley Field in Chicago when the Cubs win. The flag arrived in time for some hopeful use this season, but it was not to be. The Arizona Diamondbacks swept the Cubs aside last night, winning their third straight game and ending the Cubs season. Today the ‘L’ flag flies over Wrigley, and the ‘W’ on my new flag has new meaning, ‘Wait Until Next Year’.

As dissapointing as the ending was, I enjoyed a great season with the Cubs this year. I got to see them four times, once in DC, and a wonderful three times at Wrigley in August. Winning the division championship was great, I only wish the MLB.com shop had managed to deliver my new Cubs championship cap and t-shirt to me in time to wear before their season was over.

The Cubs last won the World Series in 1908. Next year offers a poetic opportunity for a century-delayed repeat. Eamus Catuli!

Da Bears

Ouch! It was a sweet season for the Chicago Bears, and a painful loss in the Super Bowl tonight. All season long, the Bears defense and special teams covered for the performance of their much maligned quarterback Rex Grossman. And I was right there with the Rex defenders, including Bears Coach Lovie Smith, standing by their QB and the success reflected in their record. But it would be pretty hard to pin the Bears Super Bowl loss anywhere but squarely on Rex’s shoulders. Every player on the field had to deal with the same miserable conditions that no one expected to find when they booked the Super Bowl in Miami. But poor Rex could hardly take a snap without losing the handle, or throw a pass without giving it up to the other team. Sorry Rex, it wasn’t your night. Do your reps in the off season, and let’s win it next year.

Time Flies in Soccer

Just look at them, four boys from the neighborhood who have been playing soccer together since they were tiny. The first picture is from when they played on ‘The Sharks’ in 2000, when they were all about seven years old. Cary, the one on the right, has since moved away. But the others are still together on the field. Now they’re all 13. The lower photo is from yesterday, when their PWSI All-Star team won their division with three Sunday victories (two ending in shoot-outs).

I can’t help but wonder what this group will look like in six more years… in 2012, when they’ll all be 19. Probably getting ready for the World Cup in 2014! But whether or not that comes to pass, we’ve collected many happy memories on the soccer field watching them play. Especially that first goal, back in ’01.
